Tran Luc (1825-1899), designed and built the cathedral complex of Phat Diem, south-east of Hanoi. From 1875 to 1899, he created one of the most original building complexes of Vietnam, which embeds Christianity in the local culture of Tonkin. A lake, a stone entrance gate with bell tower, and the cathedral stand on a south-north main axis, while five chapels, two grottos and a Calvary surround the cathedral. Phat Diem is considered as an archetype of inculturated church architecture in Eastern Asia.
